News Update November 2009

It's been a busy few months for the Ruxley group. Scouts and Explorers shared summer camp at Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre in the New Forest. Explorers went on Theme Park Camp. Scouts ended the half-term at LaserQuest. At half term Cubs spent the day with the birds, animals and insects at The Tropical Forest in Syon Park. On meeting nights, Cubs have been cooking and learning signing; Scouts have been looking at mobile and internet communications and have visited a local bell-tower. Lots more is planned in the run-up to Christmas. Why not join us?

Is Your Boat Missing?

Beaver leader Richard raised funds for Ruxley when he took part in Hellrunner Down South, an 11 mile, all-terrain race at Longview Military Camp on Sunday, 15th November. Here he is looking too cheerful. Well done Richard!

Ruxley Explorers Meet the New Chief Scout, Bear Grylls

How long did it take Ruxley to meet the new Chief Scout?  Less than 24 hours!  Ruxley Explorers were at Gilwell Park joining other units from around the country for Gilwell 24 - a challenge to take part in loads of activities over a continuous (no sleep!) 24 hour period.  As part of the weekend, the new Chief Scout, Bear Grylls was formally invested and took over the role as UK Scouting's figurehead from Peter Duncan.

Ruxley on a Roll - More Trophies!
cookingcompcookingcompa

Sunday 12th July saw two Ruxley teams defending the title in the District Cooking Competition against other teams of scouts and guides.  When the results were announced, everyone was delighted when the team of older scouts were declared as runners-up, but it got even better when the younger team were named winners of the scout competition.  The icing on the cake came when they were also named overall winners amongst all of the scout and guide teams.

Well Done to everyone who took part and thanks to Liz for her organisation and supervision.  It's costing a small fortune in engraving!

National Sea Scout Regatta - 1st Ruxley come good !
regatta2009

Congratulations to the 1st Ruxley U14 Double Dinghy crew (you know who you are !) who stormed through three races to become Champions at the National Sea Scout Pulling regatta last weekend. In a winning combination of technique, power and steering, they won the final by a convincing margin. This was the first trophy 1st Ruxley have won at this regatta and to do so in style made it all the more memorable for the large contingent of Ruxley supporters. Very well done to the crew - EH, SW,CHL. Their reward was to be presented with the trophy and certificate by Lieutenant Commander Griffiths RN.

Over the weekend we saw very determined performances by all the Ruxley crews. Particularly memorable was the fightback from CP in the U16 Kayak semi to overhaul the leader and qualify for the final - another first for Ruxley. In the U14 sculling over the stern event, MB ably represented us and did very well reaching the buoy turn in a strong position. The U16 gig crew (P HL, AH,CP, BJ,EB) won their heat and made it to the quarter finals, only narrowly missing out on a semi final spot. In the U16 Single Dinghy, AH did really well to get to the semi final stage, showing all her usual determination. This year we also had two crews entered in the U18 events from our explorer unit. MW dug in with a determined performance in his U18 Single Dinghy heat to gain second place, whilst the explorer gig crew (MC, EHL, SB, RP, JB) also fought hard in their race against Bournemouth. Well done all !

Whilst its great to win some silverware, our primary aim is of course to involve as many scouts as possible in these events. Win or lose, the opportunity to take part with the RN recognised groups provides many memorable experiences for the scouts and explorers which will stay with them over the years. This year we entered more events reflecting the progress that has been made in water activities over the last 2 or 3 years by the Group and we aim to continue this next year. We would like to recognise the help and opportunity afforded to us by Warspite in the use of their facilities again, its much appreciated. Thanks also to parents and supporters who came along this weekend and gave encouragement just when its most needed over the final stretch to the finish line ! Finally, Well done to all the Ruxley crews - you were a credit to the Group !

We're now thinking about next year and we know already that the regatta will be held on 3/4th July 2010, so please keep diaries free and keep practising !
